Love color and pattern, but not sure how to create the right mix? If you're a lover of bold bedrooms like me, this is the post for you! A combination of colorful fabrics and an easy DIY washi tape wall treatment (see tutorial HERE) really brought our guest room together. See my tips below to create your own happy bedroom. The room only has one small window, and we needed light and bright walls to freshen up the space.
TIP #1: Start with 1-2 Elements of Inspiration
It all started with this Brooke Wright Designs fabric and Gray Malin photograph (below). Brooke is an artist out of Fort Worth, and we've become friends over the years. She make custom textiles and apparel that are just dreamy. When I met the delightful and talented Gray Malin a few years ago, I knew that I wanted one of his special pieces in my home. So...some fabric and a photograph-- that was the starting point of this room. By starting with a couple of items that you really love, you can build your design around those. Many patterns can work together as long as they vary in size and scale.
I selected a view of the Martha's Vineyard shoreline as it's where hubby and I fell in love, and Gray was so sweet to send us a personal note as a surprise.
TIP #2: Create a Focal Point with the Bed
I've always been a fan of a canopy in a guest room as it makes it feel even more like a special retreat. I wanted to give a nod to midcentury with bold patterns and colors. I designed a channeled headboard in the loveliest shade of cobalt velvet, which is part of the Taylor Burke Home custom headboard program. It is the perfect addition to the fun canopy in the room and echoes the shape. The deep shade of blue of the headboard really helps to ground the space.
TIP #3: Keep Bedding Simple & Accent with Colorful Pillows
As far as the bedding goes I opted for good ole plain white. I love white bedding as it can be bleached and thrown in the dryer with ease. The shams are where we get the color on this bed-- I mixed and matched various patterns with some of my favorites from Lacefield Designs. I then used that beautiful palm fabric again to go on the inside of the canopy. It is the perfect complement to the bedding.
TIP #4: Don't Forget Artwork
Artwork is such a personal thing, and you should select what makes you happy. To complement the Gray Malin photograph I wanted to add some contemporary artwork to the space. I have been a fan of Miles Purvis for quite some time, and her colorful collages are just stunning. When my Mom passed away in 2008 I kept several pieces of her clothing. She loved wearing a leopard print vest, and I gave it to Miles to create some special pieces of artwork for this space.
You can see where she incorporated Mom's vest into the collar of this piece and into the composition of the other two pieces in the space. This piece makes me feel like a little angel is watching over all in this room, and I smile whenever I see it.
DIY Wallpaper Look
Now let's talk about that wall treatment, shall we?!! It definitely was a labor of love. I absolutely love it, and my guests do, too. You can see the full tutorial HERE. I painted the walls a bright white in an eggshell finish. I love this Valspar Paint as it truly is a bright white that is soft and easy on the eyes. The great thing about using washi tape is that it is so user friendly. You can easily pull it up and retape if necessary. In the end the result looks like wallpaper and everyone comments how much they love it! See the full tutorial HERE.

We get a beautiful glow all over the space from this custom Louise Gaskill chandelier made from vintage Murano glass. We kept the other details of the fixture simple to go well with my midcentury vibes.
The other lighting in the space includes these vintage brass table lamps from Chairish, which is my go-to resource for all things vintage. I topped these off with colorful Taylor Burke Home finials. I also just adore this beautiful gold leafed floor lamp from Couture Lamps. It is the perfect accent to this fuschia velvet Newport Swivel Chair from Taylor Burke Home.
